Envirothon

What is the Envirothon?

The Envirothon is a yearly competition for students in grades 9-12 to demonstrate their knowledge of the environment and natural resources. Students, in teams of 5, are tested on their knowledge of soil and land use, wildlife, forestry, aquatic ecology, and a current environmental issue.

The contest is a great opportunity for students to gain practical, hands-on skills that will be useful throughout their careers. Students have the chance to improve their teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving while participating. Envirothon connects students to professional, seasoned experts, inspiring the next generation of environmental professionals.

Participation in the Envirothon

The State of Ohio is divided into 5 separate Envirothon areas, and each area holds their own contest in the spring. Stark County is part of the Area II Envirothon competition. Each school district may send 3 teams to the area level contest, accompanied by an advisor. The area contest is a 1-day event.

The top 4 teams from each area contest move on to the state level contest. The state contest is a 2-day event. After the top 20 Ohio teams compete in June, the top scoring state team moves onto the international level, the National Conservation Federation (NCF) Envirothon. The NCF-Envirothon is a 7-day event. The NCF-Envirothon is held in a different state, or province, each year. The 2023 NCF-Envirothon will be held in New Brunswick, Canada.
